Linux Kernel up to 6.3.1 i915 intel_get_crtc_new_encoder state issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.179/5.15.110/6.1.27/6.2.14/6.3.1. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function intel_get_crtc_new_encoder of the component i915. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a state issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-371. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/i915: Make intel_get_crtc_new_encoder() less oopsy The point of the WARN was to print something, not oops straight up. Currently that is precisely what happens if we can't find the connector for the crtc in the atomic state. Get the dev pointer from the atomic state instead of the potentially NULL encoder to avoid that. (cherry picked from commit 3b6692357f70498f617ea1b31a0378070a0acf1c)

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53571 since 10/04/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/07/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 319448 (EulerOS Virtualization 2.13.1 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2026-2132)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.180, 5.15.111, 6.1.28, 6.2.15 or 6.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 780f303233c35eeb5132e3ee1cbc8f4cebe86dd2/54202488c835dab8c648acd107f0bb8eaa699894/0fe6ef82e4f4764e8f556632e4cd93d78d448e99/8cd725315c559a8a4d18ac1d7fce1d6b9a667529/fd8b0abecdf66379e9d25d7448b942b5be379cb2/631420b06597a33c72b6dcef78d1c2dea17f452d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
