Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.4.10 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function damos_new_filter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/damon/core: initialize damo_filter->list from damos_new_filter() damos_new_filter() is not initializing the list field of newly allocated filter object. However, DAMON sysfs interface and DAMON_RECLAIM are not initializing it after calling damos_new_filter(). As a result, accessing uninitialized memory is possible. Actually, adding multiple DAMOS filters via DAMON sysfs interface caused NULL pointer dereferencing. Initialize the field just after the allocation from damos_new_filter().
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53555 since 10/04/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 6.4.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch da7beebb49c643cd03c54447ed66595936a7a1ce/5f1fc67f2cb8d3035d3acd273b48b97835af8afd is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at EUVD (EUVD-2023-60053) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2194). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
