Linux Kernel up to 5.15.112/6.1.29/6.3.3 bnxt bnxt_get_nvram_directory buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.112/6.1.29/6.3.3. This issue affects the function bnxt_get_nvram_directory of the component bnxt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bnxt: avoid overflow in bnxt_get_nvram_directory() The value of an arithmetic expression is subject of possible overflow due to a failure to cast operands to a larger data type before performing arithmetic. Used macro for multiplication instead operator for avoiding overflow. Found by Security Code and Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53661 since 10/07/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/01/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 278484 (EulerOS 2.0 SP13 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-2501)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.15.113, 6.1.30 or 6.3.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d5eaf2a6b077f32a477feb1e9e1c1f60605b460e/efb1a257513438d43f4335f09b2f684e8167cad2/17e0453a7523ad7a25bb47af941b150a6c66d7b6/7c6dddc239abe660598c49ec95ea0ed6399a4b2a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (278484), EUVD (EUVD-2025-31948) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2229). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
