Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.5.2. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function dev_pm_opp_get_required_pstate of the file drivers/opp/core.c of the component OPP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: OPP: Fix potential null ptr dereference in dev_pm_opp_get_required_pstate() "opp" pointer is dereferenced before the IS_ERR_OR_NULL() check. Fix it by removing the dereference to cache opp_table and dereference it directly where opp_table is used. This fixes the following smatch warning: drivers/opp/core.c:232 dev_pm_opp_get_required_pstate() warn: variable dereferenced before IS_ERR check 'opp' (see line 230)
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-53664 since 10/07/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 6.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 25130b27e0352acb83e91c467853eb9afad3b644/7ddd8deb1c3c0363a7e14fafb5df26e2089a69a5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
