Summary
A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 6.4.3. This affects the function __bch_btree_node_alloc. The manipulation leads to null pointer dereference.
This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-53681. No exploit exists.
It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.4.3. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function __bch_btree_node_alloc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bcache: Fix __bch_btree_node_alloc to make the failure behavior consistent In some specific situations, the return value of __bch_btree_node_alloc may be NULL. This may lead to a potential NULL pointer dereference in caller function like a calling chain : btree_split->bch_btree_node_alloc->__bch_btree_node_alloc. Fix it by initializing the return value in __bch_btree_node_alloc.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53681 since 10/07/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 4.19.291, 5.4.253, 5.10.188, 5.15.121, 6.1.39 or 6.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
