Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift Container Platform (version now known) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function exsltFuncResultComp of the component XML Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type confusion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-843. The product allocates or initializes a resource such as a pointer, object, or variable using one type, but it later accesses that resource using a type that is incompatible with the original type. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in the exsltFuncResultComp() function of libxslt, which handles EXSLT elements during stylesheet parsing. Due to improper type handling, the function may treat an XML document node as a regular XML element node, resulting in a type confusion. This can cause unexpected memory reads and potential crashes. While difficult to exploit, the flaw could lead to application instability or denial of service.

The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-11731 since 10/14/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 10/25/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 271411 (SUSE SLES15 / openSUSE 15 Security Update : libxslt (SUSE-SU-2025:3743-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (271411) and EUVD (EUVD-2025-34140). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
