F5 F5OS-A up to 1.5.3/1.8.0 rSeries FIPS os command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in F5 F5OS-A up to 1.5.3/1.8.0. Affected is some unknown processing of the component rSeries FIPS Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

When a highly-privileged, authenticated attacker attempts to initialize the rSeries FIPS module using a password with special shell metacharacters, arbitrary system commands may be executed, and the FIPS hardware security module (HSM) may fail to initialize. A successful exploit can allow the attacker to cross a security boundary. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.

The advisory is available at my.f5.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-60013 since 10/04/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 272119 (F5 Networks F5OS-A FIPS HSM Password Initialization (K000154661)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.5.4 or 1.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (272119) and EUVD (EUVD-2025-34635). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
