Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apache Syncope up to 2.1.14/3.0.13/4.0.1. This affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privilege escalation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-653. The product does not properly compartmentalize or isolate functionality, processes, or resources that require different privilege levels, rights, or permissions. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Apache Syncope offers the ability to extend / customize the base behavior on every deployment by allowing to provide custom implementations of a few Java interfaces; such implementations can be provided either as Java or Groovy classes, with the latter being particularly attractive as the machinery is set for runtime reload. Such a feature has been available for a while, but recently it was discovered that a malicious administrator can inject Groovy code that can be executed remotely by a running Apache Syncope Core instance. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 3.0.14 / 4.0.2, which fix this issue by forcing the Groovy code to run in a sandbox.
The advisory is shared at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-57738. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/20/2025).
Upgrading to version 3.0.14 or 4.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
