Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.16.9 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function pci_set_drvdata. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/gma500: Fix null dereference in hdmi teardown pci_set_drvdata sets the value of pdev->driver_data to NULL, after which the driver_data obtained from the same dev is dereferenced in oaktrail_hdmi_i2c_exit, and the i2c_dev is extracted from it. To prevent this, swap these calls. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with Svacer.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-40011 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
