Linux Kernel up to 6.3.3 uninitialized pointer

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.3.3. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized pointer vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-824. The product accesses or uses a pointer that has not been initialized. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: brcmfmac: cfg80211: Pass the PMK in binary instead of hex Apparently the hex passphrase mechanism does not work on newer chips/firmware (e.g. BCM4387). It seems there was a simple way of passing it in binary all along, so use that and avoid the hexification. OpenBSD has been doing it like this from the beginning, so this should work on all chips. Also clear the structure before setting the PMK. This was leaking uninitialized stack contents to the device.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-53715 since 10/22/2025. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/28/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 276910 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:4189-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.14.316, 4.19.284, 5.4.244, 5.10.181, 5.15.113, 6.1.30 or 6.3.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1687845eb8f37360a9ee849a3587ab659b090773/2bc34facb90ceeff6f8c17d2006575a6d07c3825/56c7e9c39bd54fd753c0c4b1ed10278cbd3a5f02/4e8dc0e5c7636efaadbd7e488acd34b4291c0431/e242c66f7ecfe8f5b6eb308f4ea464fd8589c866/f8a6c53ff1d91acd5a20eb627edbffd816eb9a4e/2fa3a5226b05e0a797c68b9609dcebe0cd236b27/89b89e52153fda2733562776c7c9d9d3ebf8dd6d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (276910) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2394). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
