Details
A vulnerability was found in sakaiproject sakai up to 23.4/24.x. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function EncryptionUtilityServiceImpl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a prng seed vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-337. A Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG) is initialized from a predictable seed, such as the process ID or system time. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Sakai is a Collaboration and Learning Environment. Prior to versions 23.5 and 25.0, EncryptionUtilityServiceImpl initialized an AES256TextEncryptor password (serverSecretKey) using RandomStringUtils with the default java.util.Random. java.util.Random is a non‑cryptographic PRNG and can be predicted from limited state/seed information (e.g., start time window), substantially reducing the effective search space of the generated key. An attacker who can obtain ciphertexts (e.g., exported or at‑rest strings protected by this service) and approximate the PRNG seed can feasibly reconstruct the serverSecretKey and decrypt affected data. SAK-49866 is patched in Sakai 23.5, 25.0, and trunk.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-62710 since 10/20/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600.001 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Upgrading to version 23.5 or 25.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bde070104b1de01f4a6458dca6d9e0880a0e3c04 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
