Linux Kernel up to 6.17.2 KVM privilege escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.17.2. It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component KVM. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RISC-V: KVM: Write hgatp register with valid mode bits According to the RISC-V Privileged Architecture Spec, when MODE=Bare is selected, software must write zero to the remaining fields of hgatp. We have detected the valid mode supported by the HW before, So using a valid mode to detect how many vmid bits are supported.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-40065 since 04/16/2025. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/15/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 271877 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-40065), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.17.3 or 6.18-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d00b61cd37f4c183ce0edbc9f8ccf6d5430ea357/2b351e3d04be9e1533f26c3464f1e44a5beace30 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
