Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18-rc1. Affected is the function try_to_register_card of the component usb-audio. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: usb-audio: Fix NULL pointer deference in try_to_register_card In try_to_register_card(), the return value of usb_ifnum_to_if() is passed directly to usb_interface_claimed() without a NULL check, which will lead to a NULL pointer dereference when creating an invalid USB audio device. Fix this by adding a check to ensure the interface pointer is valid before passing it to usb_interface_claimed().
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-40085 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
