Linux Kernel up to 6.1.157/6.6.113/6.12.54/6.17.4 usb __free null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.157/6.6.113/6.12.54/6.17.4 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function __free of the component usb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: gadget: f_ecm: Refactor bind path to use __free() After an bind/unbind cycle, the ecm->notify_req is left stale. If a subsequent bind fails, the unified error label attempts to free this stale request, leading to a NULL pointer dereference when accessing ep->ops->free_request. Refactor the error handling in the bind path to use the __free() automatic cleanup mechanism.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-40093 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 272062 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-40093), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.158, 6.6.114, 6.12.55, 6.17.5 or 6.18-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d3745aaef19198d0c81637a7dd50ef53c4f879b7/070f341d86cf2c098d63e484a86c7c1d2696a868/15b9faf53ba8719700596e7ef78879ce200e8c2e/4630c68bade82f087eaaab22e9a361da2f18d139/42988380ac67c76bb9dff8f77d7ef3eefd50b7b5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (272062) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2450). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
