Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.157/6.6.113/6.12.54/6.17.4/6.18-rc1. This affects the function parse_dfs_referrals of the component cifs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: parse_dfs_referrals: prevent oob on malformed input Malicious SMB server can send invalid reply to FSCTL_DFS_GET_REFERRALS - reply smaller than sizeof(struct get_dfs_referral_rsp) - reply with number of referrals smaller than NumberOfReferrals in the header Processing of such replies will cause oob. Return -EINVAL error on such replies to prevent oob-s.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-40099 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 272049 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-40099), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.158, 6.6.114, 6.12.55, 6.17.5 or 6.18-rc2 eliminates this vulnerability.
