Keras up to 3.11.3 tar get_file path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Keras up to 3.11.3. Impacted is the function get_file of the component tar Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to path traversal. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2025-12060. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Keras up to 3.11.3 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function get_file of the component tar Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The keras.utils.get_file API in Keras, when used with the extract=True option for tar archives, is vulnerable to a path traversal attack. The utility uses Python's tarfile.extractall function without the filter="data" feature. A remote attacker can craft a malicious tar archive containing special symlinks, which, when extracted, allows them to write arbitrary files to any location on the filesystem outside of the intended destination folder. This vulnerability is linked to the underlying Python tarfile weakness, identified as CVE-2025-4517. Note that upgrading Python to one of the versions that fix CVE-2025-4517 (e.g. Python 3.13.4) is not enough. One additionally needs to upgrade Keras to a version with the fix (Keras 3.12).

The weakness was published by Krishna Gudimetla. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-12060 since 10/22/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 272074 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-12060), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.12 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (272074) and EUVD (EUVD-2025-37039). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
