EFS Web Server 4.0 NTFS File System ::$data information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in EFS Web Server 4.0 (Web Server). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ::$data of the component NTFS File System. The manipulation of the argument ::$data with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Easy File Sharing (EFS) Web Server 4.0, when running on an NTFS file system, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files under the web root by appending "::$DATA" to the end of a HTTP GET request, which accesses the alternate data stream.

The bug was discovered 10/31/2006. The weakness was shared 11/03/2006 by Greg Linares (Website). The advisory is shared at milw0rm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-5714 since 11/03/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23636 (Easy File Sharing Web Server Crafted Request ADS Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86755 (Easy File Sharing Web Server Information Disclosure and Input Validation Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29925), Exploit-DB (2690), Tenable (23636), SecurityFocus (BID 20823†) and OSVDB (30150†).
