KubeVirt up to 1.6.x on Kubernetes improper check or handling of exceptional conditions

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in KubeVirt up to 1.6.x on Kubernetes. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper check or handling of exceptional conditions vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-703. The product does not properly anticipate or handle exceptional conditions that rarely occur during normal operation of the product. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

KubeVirt is a virtual machine management add-on for Kubernetes. Prior to 1.7.0-beta.0, a logic flaw in the virt-controller allows an attacker to disrupt the control over a running VMI by creating a pod with the same labels as the legitimate virt-launcher pod associated with the VMI. This can mislead the virt-controller into associating the fake pod with the VMI, resulting in incorrect status updates and potentially causing a DoS (Denial-of-Service). This vulnerability is fixed in 1.7.0-beta.0.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-64435 since 11/03/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 298915 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kubevirt, virt-api-container, virt-controller-container, virt-exportproxy-container, virt-exportserver-container, virt-handler-container, virt-launcher-container, virt-libguestfs-tools-container, virt-operator-container, virt-pr-helper-container, virt-synchronization-controller-container (SUSE-SU-2026:0479-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.7.0-beta.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9a6f4a3a707992038ef705da4cb3bba8c89d36ba is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
