Details
A vulnerability was found in Stefan Ritt Elog Web Logbook up to 2.6.2. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function send_file_direct of the file elogd.c of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in elogd.c in ELOG 2.6.2 and earlier allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTML or web script via (1) the filename for downloading, which is not quoted in an error message by the send_file_direct function, and (2) the Type or Category values in a New entry, which is not properly handled in an error message by the submit_elog function.
The bug was discovered 10/31/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/07/2006 by Ulf Harnhammar (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-5791 since 11/07/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23947 (Debian DSA-1242-1 : elog - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29986), Tenable (23947), SecurityFocus (BID 20882†), OSVDB (30176†) and Secunia (SA22638†). The entries VDB-32523 and VDB-33171 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
