Details
A vulnerability was found in Axis AXIS OS up to 12.6.17 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component ACAP Configuration File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-35. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize '.../...//' (doubled triple dot slash) sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An ACAP configuration file lacked sufficient input validation, which could allow a path traversal attack leading to potential privilege escalation. This vulnerability can only be exploited if the Axis device is configured to allow the installation of unsigned ACAP applications, and if an attacker convinces the victim to install a malicious ACAP application.
The weakness was published by 51l3nc3. It is possible to read the advisory at axis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-5454 since 06/02/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 12.6.18 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at EUVD (EUVD-2025-74045) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2546). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
