Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP Messenger Service memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Messenger Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Messenger Service for Windows NT through Server 2003 does not properly verify the length of the message, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a buffer overflow attack.

The bug was discovered 01/01/2001. The weakness was disclosed 10/15/2003 by Last Stage with The Last Stage of Delirium Research Group as MS03-043 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0717 since 09/02/2003. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by LSD-PLaNET and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at immunitysec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1017 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11890 (MS03-043: Buffer Overrun in Messenger Service (828035) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and relying on port 135. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 70033 (Microsoft Windows NT Messenger Service Buffer Overrun Vulnerability (MS03-043)).

Applying the patch MS03-043 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3235. In this case the pattern |04 00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2421.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13413), Exploit-DB (111), Tenable (11890), SecurityFocus (BID 8826†) and OSVDB (10936†). xforce.iss.net is providing further details. The entries VDB-82, VDB-333, VDB-427 and VDB-561 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
