Linux Kernel up to 6.17.2 return value

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.17.2. This affects an unknown function. This manipulation causes return value. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-40112. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.17.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a return value vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-252. The product does not check the return value from a method or function, which can prevent it from detecting unexpected states and conditions. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sparc: fix accurate exception reporting in copy_{from_to}_user for Niagara The referenced commit introduced exception handlers on user-space memory references in copy_from_user and copy_to_user. These handlers return from the respective function and calculate the remaining bytes left to copy using the current register contents. This commit fixes a couple of bad calculations and a broken epilogue in the exception handlers. This will prevent crashes and ensure correct return values of copy_from_user and copy_to_user in the faulting case. The behaviour of memcpy stays unchanged.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-40112 since 04/16/2025. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/07/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 276782 (Debian dla-4379 : linux-config-6.1 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.301, 5.10.246, 5.15.195, 6.1.156, 6.6.112, 6.12.53, 6.17.3 or 6.18-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 05440320ea3e249d5f984918f2bf51210c1a7c03/7823fc4d8ab5e57f8db7806ff2530c03c166c4bb/37547d8e6eba87507279ee3dfddfd9dc46335454/a365ee556e45f780ee322b349a06efdad0c1458f/8cdeb5e482d3fdce7e825444b6ca3865e24c0228/a90ce516a73dbe087f9bf3dbf311301a58d125c6/088c5098ec6d6b0396edfbf3dad3e81de8469c1c/0b67c8fc10b13a9090340c5f8a37d308f4e1571c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
