Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.112/6.12.53/6.17.3. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component IPMI Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Revert "ipmi: fix msg stack when IPMI is disconnected" This reverts commit c608966f3f9c2dca596967501d00753282b395fc. This patch has a subtle bug that can cause the IPMI driver to go into an infinite loop if the BMC misbehaves in a certain way. Apparently certain BMCs do misbehave this way because several reports have come in recently about this.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-40192 since 04/16/2025. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 275360 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-40192), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.113, 6.12.54, 6.17.4 or 6.18-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
