A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in VMware Player 1.0/1.0.5 Build 56455/2.0.1 Build 55017 (Virtualization Software). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component DHCP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The DHCP server in EMC VMware Workstation before 5.5.5 Build 56455 and 6.x before 6.0.1 Build 55017, Player before 1.0.5 Build 56455 and Player 2 before 2.0.1 Build 55017, ACE before 1.0.3 Build 54075 and ACE 2 before 2.0.1 Build 55017, and Server before 1.0.4 Build 56528 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed packet that triggers "corrupt stack memory."
The bug was discovered 09/19/2007. The weakness was presented 09/20/2007 by Neel Metha Ryan Smith with IBM ISS X-Force (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vmware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0061 since 01/04/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116315 (Critical Security Updates for all Supported Versions of VMware ESX Server VMware Server VMware Workstation VMware ACE and VMware Player (VMSA-2007-0006)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at vmware.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
