Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Avahi 0.6.14. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:
Avahi before 0.6.15 does not verify the sender identity of netlink messages to ensure that they come from the kernel instead of another process, which allows local users to spoof network changes to Avahi.
The bug was discovered 11/13/2006. The weakness was presented 11/14/2006 by Steve Grubb (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ubuntulinux.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-5461 since 10/23/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29381 (SuSE 10 Security Update : avahi (ZYPP Patch Number 2216)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 0.6.15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
