Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Dell ControlVault3 and ControlVault3 Plus (the affected version is unknown). Affected is an unknown code of the component ControlVault WBDI Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer access with incorrect length value vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-805. The product uses a sequential operation to read or write a buffer, but it uses an incorrect length value that causes it to access memory that is outside of the bounds of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple out-of-bounds read and write vulnerabilities exist in the ControlVault WBDI Driver Broadcom Storage Adapter functionality of Dell ControlVault3 prior to 5.15.14.19 and Dell ControlVault3 Plus prior to 6.2.36.47. A specially crafted WinBioControlUnit call can lead to memory corruption. An attacker can issue an api call to trigger this vulnerability. This vulnerability is triggered when submitting a `WinBioControlUnit` call to the StorageAdapter with the ControlCode 2 (`WBIO_USH_GET_IDENTITY`) with an improper `ReceiveBuferSize` value.
The weakness was disclosed by Philippe Laulheret as dsa-2025-228. The advisory is available at dell.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-36460 since 04/15/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/18/2025).
