Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in FluentBit 4.1.0. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component in_http/in_splunk/in_elasticsearch. The manipulation of the argument tag_key with an unknown input leads to a improper validation of specified type of input vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-1287. The product receives input that is expected to be of a certain type, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input is actually of the expected type. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Fluent Bit in_http, in_splunk, and in_elasticsearch input plugins fail to sanitize tag_key inputs. An attacker with network access or the ability to write records into Splunk or Elasticsearch can supply tag_key values containing special characters such as newlines or ../ that are treated as valid tags. Because tags influence routing and some outputs derive filenames or contents from tags, this can allow newline injection, path traversal, forged record injection, or log misrouting, impacting data integrity and log routing.

The advisory is available at fluentbit.io. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-12977 since 11/10/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 276933 (Fluent Bit < 4.0.12 / 4.1.x < 4.1.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
