Details
A vulnerability has been found in Mattermost up to 10.5.12/10.11.4/10.12.1/11.0.3 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component OpenID Connect Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a incorrect implementation of authentication algorithm vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-303. The requirements for the product dictate the use of an established authentication algorithm, but the implementation of the algorithm is incorrect. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Mattermost versions 10.12.x <= 10.12.1, 10.11.x <= 10.11.4, 10.5.x <= 10.5.12, 11.0.x <= 11.0.3 fail to properly validate OAuth state tokens during OpenID Connect authentication which allows an authenticated attacker with team creation privileges to take over a user account via manipulation of authentication data during the OAuth completion flow. This requires email verification to be disabled (default: disabled), OAuth/OpenID Connect to be enabled, and the attacker to control two users in the SSO system with one of them never having logged into Mattermost.
The weakness was released by daw10. The advisory is available at mattermost.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-12419 since 10/28/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 278110 (Mattermost Server 10.5.x <= 10.5.12 / 10.11.x <= 10.11.4 / 10.12.x <= 10.12.1 / 11.0.x <= 11.0.3 Improper Authentication (MMSA-2025-00547)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 10.5.13, 10.11.5, 10.12.2, 11.0.4 or 11.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
