Details
A vulnerability was found in ABRT up to 2.17.6. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in the ABRT daemon’s handling of user-supplied mount information.ABRT copies up to 12 characters from an untrusted input and places them directly into a shell command (docker inspect %s) without proper validation. An unprivileged local user can craft a payload that injects shell metacharacters, causing the root-running ABRT process to execute attacker-controlled commands and ultimately gain full root privileges.
The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-12744 since 11/05/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 277364 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-12744), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
