Details
A vulnerability was found in NetGear WG311v1 2.3.1.10 (Wireless LAN Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file wg311nd5.sys of the component Wireless Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the wireless driver (WG311ND5.SYS) 2.3.1.10 for NetGear WG311v1 wireless adapter allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an 802.11 management frame with a long SSID.
The bug was discovered 11/22/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/26/2006 by Laurent Butti as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-6125 since 11/26/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43125 (NetGear WG311v1 Wireless Driver SSID Heap Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30543), SecurityFocus (BID 21251†), OSVDB (30511†), Secunia (SA23051†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017275†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
