A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Business Objects Crystal Reports XI (Reporting Software) (affected version not known). Affected is some unknown functionality. Stack-based buffer overflow in Visual Studio Crystal Reports for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 and 2002 SP1, .NET 2003 and 2003 SP1, and 2005 and 2005 SP1 (formerly Business Objects Crystal Reports XI Professional) allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted RPT file.
The bug was discovered 11/23/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/27/2006 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6133 since 11/27/2006. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90409 (Crystal Reports for Visual Studio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-052)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5596.
