Linux Kernel up to 6.0.6 netsec_register_mdio reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation leads to reference count. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-50624. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.263/5.4.222/5.10.152/5.15.76/6.0.6 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function netsec_register_mdio. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: netsec: fix error handling in netsec_register_mdio() If phy_device_register() fails, phy_device_free() need be called to put refcount, so memory of phy device and device name can be freed in callback function. If get_phy_device() fails, mdiobus_unregister() need be called, or it will cause warning in mdiobus_free() and kobject is leaked.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-50624 since 12/08/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 4.19.264, 5.4.223, 5.10.153, 5.15.77 or 6.0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 728884b22d83148a330b23f9472f1e118b589211/fda2d07234a21be4d71ebfe97a45f499726902d6/62f0a08e82a6312efd7df7f595c0b11d4ffde610/1e0bee973ef6fc3c1e3acb014515eaea37c8fa17/846e677daf51220d7975c61a20e440a88473951e/94423589689124e8cd145b38a1034be7f25835b2 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
