Linux Kernel up to 6.17.7 fbdev bit_putcs_aligned out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.17.7. This impacts the function bit_putcs_aligned of the component fbdev. Executing a manipulation can lead to out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2025-40322. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.17.7 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function bit_putcs_aligned of the component fbdev. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: bitblit: bound-check glyph index in bit_putcs* bit_putcs_aligned()/unaligned() derived the glyph pointer from the character value masked by 0xff/0x1ff, which may exceed the actual font's glyph count and read past the end of the built-in font array. Clamp the index to the actual glyph count before computing the address. This fixes a global out-of-bounds read reported by syzbot.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-40322 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 277658 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-40322), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
