Details
A vulnerability was found in Alliedtelesyn AT-TFTP 1.9. It has been classified as very critical. Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation of the argument server with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in Allied Telesyn TFTP Server (AT-TFTP) 1.9, and possibly earlier, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via a long filename in a (1) GET or (2) PUT command.
The bug was discovered 11/26/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/03/2004 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is available at aluigi.altervista.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6184 since 11/30/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/11/2019).
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23736 (AT-TFTP Server Filename Handling Remote Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2337.
