Linux Kernel up to 6.12.57/6.17.7 gpiolib_seq_start uninitialized pointer

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2025-68167. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.57/6.17.7. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function gpiolib_seq_start. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized pointer vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-824. The product accesses or uses a pointer that has not been initialized. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gpiolib: fix invalid pointer access in debugfs If the memory allocation in gpiolib_seq_start() fails, the s->private field remains uninitialized and is later dereferenced without checking in gpiolib_seq_stop(). Initialize s->private to NULL before calling kzalloc() and check it before dereferencing it.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-68167 since 12/16/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/21/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 298897 (Ubuntu 25.10 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-8029-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.58 or 6.17.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 70180a6031056096c93ed2f47c41803268bdd91c/3c91c8f424d3e44c8645ab765a38773e58afb07d/2f6115ad8864cf3f48598f26c74c7c8e5c391919 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (298897) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2868). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
