Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.117/6.12.59/6.17.9. This affects the function smb3_cleanup_fs_context_contents of the component cifs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: fix memory leak in smb3_fs_context_parse_param error path Add proper cleanup of ctx->source and fc->source to the cifs_parse_mount_err error handler. This ensures that memory allocated for the source strings is correctly freed on all error paths, matching the cleanup already performed in the success path by smb3_cleanup_fs_context_contents(). Pointers are also set to NULL after freeing to prevent potential double-free issues. This change fixes a memory leak originally detected by syzbot. The leak occurred when processing Opt_source mount options if an error happened after ctx->source and fc->source were successfully allocated but before the function completed. The specific leak sequence was: 1. ctx->source = smb3_fs_context_fullpath(ctx, '/') allocates memory 2. fc->source = kstrdup(ctx->source, GFP_KERNEL) allocates more memory 3. A subsequent error jumps to cifs_parse_mount_err 4. The old error handler freed passwords but not the source strings, causing the memory to leak. This issue was not addressed by commit e8c73eb7db0a ("cifs: client: fix memory leak in smb3_fs_context_parse_param"), which only fixed leaks from repeated fsconfig() calls but not this error path. Patch updated with minor change suggested by kernel test robot
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-68219 since 12/16/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/21/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 299530 (Amazon Linux 2023 : bpftool6.12, kernel6.12, kernel6.12-devel (ALAS2023-2026-1430)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.118, 6.12.60 or 6.17.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7627864dc3121f39e220f5253a227edf472de59e/48d69290270891f988e72edddd9688c20515421d/37010021d7e0341bb241ca00bcbae31f2c50b23f/7e4d9120cfa413dd34f4f434befc5dbe6c38b2e5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (299530) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2868). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
