A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in AOL Client Software 7.0. Affected is the function setclientinfo in the library cddbcontrol.dll of the file cddbcontrolaol.cddbaolcontrol of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation of the argument ClientId with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in the SetClientInfo function in the CDDBControlAOL.CDDBAOLControl ActiveX control (cddbcontrol.dll), as used in America Online (AOL) 7.0 4114.563, 8.0 4129.230, and 9.0 Security Edition 4156.910, and possibly other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long ClientId argument.
The weakness was published 12/10/2006 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6442 since 12/09/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21772 (Gracenote CDDBControl ActiveX Control Option String Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
