Linux Kernel up to 6.0.2 ieee802154 raw_sendmsg privilege escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.219/5.10.149/5.15.74/5.19.16/6.0.2. This issue affects the function raw_sendmsg of the component ieee802154. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/ieee802154: don't warn zero-sized raw_sendmsg() syzbot is hitting skb_assert_len() warning at __dev_queue_xmit() [1], for PF_IEEE802154 socket's zero-sized raw_sendmsg() request is hitting __dev_queue_xmit() with skb->len == 0. Since PF_IEEE802154 socket's zero-sized raw_sendmsg() request was able to return 0, don't call __dev_queue_xmit() if packet length is 0. ---------- #include <sys/socket.h> #include <netinet/in.h> int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { struct sockaddr_in addr = { .sin_family = AF_INET, .sin_addr.s_addr = htonl(INADDR_LOOPBACK) }; struct iovec iov = { }; struct msghdr hdr = { .msg_name = &addr, .msg_namelen = sizeof(addr), .msg_iov = &iov, .msg_iovlen = 1 }; sendmsg(socket(PF_IEEE802154, SOCK_RAW, 0), &hdr, 0); return 0; } ---------- Note that this might be a sign that commit fd1894224407c484 ("bpf: Don't redirect packets with invalid pkt_len") should be reverted, for skb->len == 0 was acceptable for at least PF_IEEE802154 socket.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-50706 since 12/24/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/24/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 279917 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-50706), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.220, 5.10.150, 5.15.75, 5.19.17 or 6.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4a36de8947794fa21435d1e916e089095f3246a8/791489a5c56396ddfed75fc525066d4738dace46/34f31a2b667914ab701ca725554a0b447809d7ef/df0da3fc131132b6c32a15c4da4ffa3a5aea1af2/9974d220c5073d035b5469d1d8ecd71da86c7afd/b12e924a2f5b960373459c8f8a514f887adf5cac is able to eliminate this problem.
