Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.162/5.15.86/6.0.16/6.1.2. It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the component nvme-pci. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvme-pci: fix mempool alloc size Convert the max size to bytes to match the units of the divisor that calculates the worst-case number of PRP entries. The result is used to determine how many PRP Lists are required. The code was previously rounding this to 1 list, but we can require 2 in the worst case. In that scenario, the driver would corrupt memory beyond the size provided by the mempool. While unlikely to occur (you'd need a 4MB in exactly 127 phys segments on a queue that doesn't support SGLs), this memory corruption has been observed by kfence.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-50756 since 12/24/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 04/21/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 279826 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-50756), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.163, 5.15.87, 6.0.17 or 6.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch dfb6d54893d544151e7f480bc44cfe7823f5ad23/9141144b37f30e3e7fa024bcfa0a13011e546ba9/e1777b4286e526c58b4ee699344b0ad85aaf83a0/b1814724e0d7162bdf4799f2d565381bc2251c63/c89a529e823d51dd23c7ec0c047c7a454a428541 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (279826) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2929). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
