Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.243/5.10.180/5.15.112/6.1.29/6.3.3. This issue affects the function lpfc_debugfs_lockstat_write of the component scsi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: lpfc: Prevent lpfc_debugfs_lockstat_write() buffer overflow A static code analysis tool flagged the possibility of buffer overflow when using copy_from_user() for a debugfs entry. Currently, it is possible that copy_from_user() copies more bytes than what would fit in the mybuf char array. Add a min() restriction check between sizeof(mybuf) - 1 and nbytes passed from the userspace buffer to protect against buffer overflow.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-54102 since 12/24/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/03/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 279861 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-54102), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.4.244, 5.10.181, 5.15.113, 6.1.30 or 6.3.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 644a9d5e22761a41d5005a26996a643da96de962/e0e7faee3a7dd6f51350cda64997116a247eb045/f91037487036e2d2f18d3c2481be6b9a366bde7f/a9df88cb31dcbd72104ec5883f35cbc1fb587e47/ad050f6cf681ebb850a9d4bc19474d3896476301/c6087b82a9146826564a55c5ca0164cac40348f5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (279861) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2929). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
