Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.5.4 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ibmebus_bus_init. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: powerpc/pseries: fix possible memory leak in ibmebus_bus_init() If device_register() returns error in ibmebus_bus_init(), name of kobject which is allocated in dev_set_name() called in device_add() is leaked. As comment of device_add() says, it should call put_device() to drop the reference count that was set in device_initialize() when it fails, so the name can be freed in kobject_cleanup().
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-54017 since 12/24/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 280046 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-54017), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
