Linux Kernel up to 6.4.3 rsi_config_wowlan wowlan_config privilege escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.187/5.15.120/6.1.38/6.3.12/6.4.3. It has been rated as critical. The manipulation of the argument wowlan_config with an unknown input leads to a unknown weakness. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: rsi: Do not configure WoWlan in shutdown hook if not enabled In case WoWlan was never configured during the operation of the system, the hw->wiphy->wowlan_config will be NULL. rsi_config_wowlan() checks whether wowlan_config is non-NULL and if it is not, then WARNs about it. The warning is valid, as during normal operation the rsi_config_wowlan() should only ever be called with non-NULL wowlan_config. In shutdown this rsi_config_wowlan() should only ever be called if WoWlan was configured before by the user. Add checks for non-NULL wowlan_config into the shutdown hook. While at it, check whether the wiphy is also non-NULL before accessing wowlan_config . Drop the single-use wowlan_config variable, just inline it into function call.

The weakness was presented by shutdown. It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-54025 since 12/24/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/27/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 280006 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-54025), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.188, 5.15.121, 6.1.39, 6.3.13 or 6.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b2aeb97fd470206e67f7b3b4a3e68212a13f747b/4391fa180856ff84a2cef4a92694a689eebb855e/eb205a06908122f50b1dd1baa43f7c8036bfc7dc/1b51236aa49a0564280bd45c94118cab6d9b0fbd/b601468539c1d97539097bfc87ad11f1704b7eb7/b241e260820b68c09586e8a0ae0fc23c0e3215bd is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
