A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk 1.x (Communications System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component IMAP Storage Voicemail Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in the voicemail functionality in Asterisk 1.4.x before 1.4.13, when using IMAP storage, might allow (1) remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long combination of Content-type and Content-description headers, or (2) local users to execute arbitrary code via a long combination of astspooldir, voicemail context, and voicemail mailbox fields. NOTE: vector 2 requires write access to Asterisk configuration files.

The weakness was disclosed 10/11/2007 by Russell Bryant Mark Michelson (Website). The advisory is available at downloads.digium.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5358 since 10/10/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at downloads.digium.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
