Details
A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 8.1.33/8.2.29/8.3.28/8.4.15/8.5.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function pdo_parse_params of the component PDO PostgreSQL Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In PHP versions 8.1.* before 8.1.34, 8.2.* before 8.2.30, 8.3.* before 8.3.29, 8.4.* before 8.4.16, 8.5.* before 8.5.1 when using the PDO PostgreSQL driver with PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES enabled, an invalid character sequence (such as \x99) in a prepared statement parameter may cause the quoting function PQescapeStringConn to return NULL, leading to a null pointer dereference in pdo_parse_params() function. This may lead to crashes (segmentation fault) and affect the availability of the target server.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-14180 since 12/06/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 282398 (Amazon Linux 2023 : php8.4, php8.4-bcmath, php8.4-cli (ALAS2023-2025-1352)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 8.1.34, 8.2.30, 8.3.29, 8.4.16 or 8.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (282398), EUVD (EUVD-2025-205486) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2887). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
