GnuPG up to 2.4.8 Signed Message signature verification

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in GnuPG up to 2.4.8. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Signed Message Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to signature verification. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2025-68972. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in GnuPG up to 2.4.8 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Signed Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a signature verification vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-347. The product does not verify, or incorrectly verifies, the cryptographic signature for data. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

In GnuPG through 2.4.8, if a signed message has \f at the end of a plaintext line, an adversary can construct a modified message that places additional text after the signed material, such that signature verification of the modified message succeeds (although an "invalid armor" message is printed during verification). This is related to use of \f as a marker to denote truncation of a long plaintext line.

This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-68972 since 12/27/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 280112 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-68972), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (280112), EUVD (EUVD-2025-205487) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2928). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
