Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.2.14/6.3.1. Affected by this vulnerability is the function __tree_connect_dfs_target of the component cifs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: fix potential race when tree connecting ipc Protect access of TCP_Server_Info::hostname when building the ipc tree name as it might get freed in cifsd thread and thus causing an use-after-free bug in __tree_connect_dfs_target(). Also, while at it, update status of IPC tcon on success and then avoid any extra tree connects.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-54280 since 12/30/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/27/2026).
