Linux Kernel up to 6.3.1 media write_ts_to_decoder memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 6.3.1. This vulnerability affects the function write_ts_to_decoder of the component media. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory corruption. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-54284. There is not any exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.3.1 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function write_ts_to_decoder of the component media. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: av7110: prevent underflow in write_ts_to_decoder() The buf[4] value comes from the user via ts_play(). It is a value in the u8 range. The final length we pass to av7110_ipack_instant_repack() is "len - (buf[4] + 1) - 4" so add a check to ensure that the length is not negative. It's not clear that passing a negative len value does anything bad necessarily, but it's not best practice. With the new bounds checking the "if (!len)" condition is no longer possible or required so remove that.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-54284 since 12/30/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 04/27/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 281695 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-54284), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.14.315, 4.19.283, 5.4.243, 5.10.211, 5.15.111, 6.1.28, 6.2.15 or 6.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6680af5be9f08d830567e9118f76d3e64684db8f/6606e2404ee9e20a3ae5b42fc3660d41b739ed3e/620b983589e0223876bf1463b01100a9c67b56ba/86ba65e5357bfbb6c082f68b265a292ee1bdde1d/ca4ce92e3ec9fd3c7c936b912b95c53331d5159c/423350af9e27f005611bd881b1df2cab66de943d/77eeb4732135c18c2fdfab80839645b393f3e774/7b93ab60fe9ed04be0ff155bc30ad39dea23e22b/eed9496a0501357aa326ddd6b71408189ed872eb is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (281695) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2941). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
