Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.1. The impacted element is the function dio_init. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory leak.
The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-50848. There is no exploit available.
Upgrading the affected component is advised.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.1. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function dio_init. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drivers: dio: fix possible memory leak in dio_init() If device_register() returns error, the 'dev' and name needs be freed. Add a release function, and then call put_device() in the error path, so the name is freed in kobject_cleanup() and to the 'dev' is freed in release function.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-50848 since 12/30/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 281700 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-50848), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.9.337, 4.14.303, 4.19.270, 5.4.229, 5.10.163, 5.15.86, 6.0.16 or 6.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch affe3cea6b3148fa66796a48640664822ceccd48/4b68caa95064ac464f1b261d08ac677e753d1088/a524e7fed696a4dfef671e0fda3511bfd2dca0cf/da64e01da40c6b71a54144126da53cc3b27201ac/fce9890e1be4c0460dad850cc8c00414a9d25f0f/a0ead7e8da84f4c3759417b8e928b65e0207c646/8e002b9fe831b27d4506df6fa60cb33ba0730ac3/78fddc0ff971f9874d53c854818cc4aafa144114/e63e99397b2613d50a5f4f02ed07307e67a190f1 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (281700) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2941). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
