Linux Kernel up to 5.15.120/6.1.39/6.4.4 mlx5e_ptp_open memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.120/6.1.39/6.4.4. This affects the function mlx5e_ptp_open. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5e: fix memory leak in mlx5e_ptp_open When kvzalloc_node or kvzalloc failed in mlx5e_ptp_open, the memory pointed by "c" or "cparams" is not freed, which can lead to a memory leak. Fix by freeing the array in the error path.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-54169 since 12/30/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.15.121, 6.1.40 or 6.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4892e1e548b5bd6524c1c89df06e4849df26fc20/83a8f7337a14cdb215c76a8f4cf3f3be8b59177d/7035e3ae600c4e9cb3dc220c24dd77112ddff8b1/d543b649ffe58a0cb4b6948b3305069c5980a1fa is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
