Linux Kernel up to 6.3.1 MIPS fw_getenv null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.3.1. This affects the function fw_getenv of the component MIPS. The manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2023-54279. There is not any exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.3.1. Affected is the function fw_getenv of the component MIPS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: MIPS: fw: Allow firmware to pass a empty env fw_getenv will use env entry to determine style of env, however it is legal for firmware to just pass a empty list. Check if first entry exist before running strchr to avoid null pointer dereference.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-54279 since 12/30/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 281730 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-54279), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.14.315, 4.19.283, 5.4.243, 5.10.180, 5.15.111, 6.1.28, 6.2.15 or 6.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f334b31625683418aaa2a335470eec950a95a254/830181ddced5a05a711dc9da8043203b1f33a77e/0f91290774c798199ba4b8df93de5c3156b5163d/47e61cadc7a5f3dffd42d2d6fda81be163f1ab82/3ef93b7bd9e042db240843f24a80e14da38c6830/a6b54af407873227caef6262e992f5422cdcb6ae/ad79828f133e98585ab2236cad04a55eb7141bbe/aeed787bbbbe1b842beec9a065a36c915226f704/ee1809ed7bc456a72dc8410b475b73021a3a68d5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
